As I read about the lives of men and women from history, I feel I know them, and yet sometime during the process of painting their image on canvas,  studying every line and detail of their face, picking up on personalty cues particularly in the eyes, and working for hours a day rendering and weeks of intricate finish work to put an accurate and living image on canvas - that is when I come to know them intimately and feel a connection to their lives.
